The small Colorado mountain town of Hutchins Creek promises to be the perfect location for NY reporter Paige MacKenzie to complete an assignment for The Manhattan Post. Situated along the Durango-Silverton train line, not only does the town set an ideal scene for an article on Old West railroad history, it also serves Paige's personal agenda to meet up with favorite cowboy Jake Norris, of Jackson Hole, for a little romance.
When a mysterious 1920's coin is discovered behind the Hutchins Creek Railroad Museum, Paige starts digging into four generations of Hutchins family history, with a little help from the Denver Mint. As legends of steam engines and coin mintage mingle, will Paige discover the true origin of the coin, or will she find herself riding the rails dangerously close to more than one long-hidden town secret?

New York City reporter Paige MacKenzie is on the case again! She's not *supposed* to be solving mysteries while on assignment in Hutchins Creek, Colorado--- she's supposed to be working on an article for her paper about railroad history in the old West. Finding a mystery to solve and danger to get into is definitely what you'd expect of Paige, though, if you've read the previous books in this series. (If you haven't, you really should --- although each of them stand alone so it's not required.) This mystery revolves around a rare coin from the 1920s that appears behind the railroad museum in Hutchins Creek, and the intrigue expands to include four generations of the Hutchins family, the Denver mint, a creepy old coin dealer, and assorted other characters. As always with Deborah Garner's books, it's very well-written, and full of such evocative imagery that I feel like I've been visiting Hutchins Creek myself. She does a great job weaving fascinating railroad history into the story, as well as lots of interesting details about coins and coin collecting, which gives a strong foundation for the mystery itself. And there's the added bonus of Paige's relationship with Jake Norris, her cowboy friend/boyfriend, which is moving forward at last with this novel. I think I enjoy every addition to the series even more than the last, and I'm already looking forward to the next installment!Product details

Hutchins Creek Cache edition by Deborah Garner Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
I loved this book. It was set in an area of Colorado that I have visited. The local characters, Rose, Jesse and Henry, were all written true to the types of people I have gotten to know in these types of mountain towns. They are down-home, no-nonsense type of people. Paige is well-written as a friendly reporter, not an "in-your-face, my story is more important than your everyday life" type that some reporters are depicted as. Jake is a cowboy who wants the girl of his dreams, but is smart enough to know that until she chooses to move out of NYC, they will have to make the best of their time together, because his moving to a city just won't work.
Paige goes to Hutchins Creek to research a story on old west railroads and a bit of local history for her next story. She finds a small town populated with people who have lived their all their lives, are friendly, warm and open. She also stumbles upon a 90 yr old mystery when little Sam finds a gold coin, in mint condition. Paige follows all leads and researches until she figures out where the coin came from and how it got where it was found.
I really enjoyed this book, it was well written and edited. It moved along at a nice pace. I recommend it to anyone wanting to read a good mystery set in a beautiful spot.
I enjoyed this book and learned a bit about the transportation system in the West. I also enjoyed the people and their stories. Great read highly recomnend.
This was a great cozy mystery with a touch of romance. Enjoyed the location and the mystery was unique and fun. All of Deborah Garner's books are a sure thing. Check her out.
Hutchins Creek Cache is the fourth in the Paige McKenzie series of novels by Deborah Garner. The story takes place approximately three months after the close of “Three Silver Doves” and, Paige has accepted another field assignment for the Manhattan Post. This time she is bound for Hutchins Creek Colorado to explore and write a story about the history of steam trains and their impact in the area. Deciding on Hutchins Creek was partly due to its location on the Durango-Silverton train line, the towns family founding, and the cozy small town surroundings that Paige has become fond of. In the last three months, Paige and Jake have also grown closer and this locale will also serve as the perfect locale for a romantic “workcation” with her Wyoming cowboy.
Upon her arrival, she is immediately taken in by the Hutchins family in all their charm and quirkiness. After touring an old train station turned museum she befriends the daughter of the owner who spends most of her days playing in the train yard at the rear of the museum. Sam’s domain is an interesting place where vintage train cars are displayed including the famous “Morning Star” which has fallen into disrepair and needs restoration. Paige learns that there is currently a collection in process to raise the funds to bring this car back to its former glory and considers giving the cause a mention in her piece for the Post. Sam also shows Paige her most prized possession, a 1926 gold Double Eagle coin which she lovingly refers to as which she calls her treasure or her “bird”. Immediately seeing that this may be a valuable find, Paige and Jake do some research but are met with interesting reactions, both from a neighboring coin dealer and the officials at the Denver Mint. Paige of course cannot let this go and her and Jake are brought into another mystery. Together, the pair find themselves eyeball deep on a decades old mystery that turns into one wild ride for them both.
This is the first book where Paige and Jake have been together for the entire story and I must say, I am loving this duo. Their dynamic is sweet and doesn’t detract at all from this story. True to form, Garner has written a novel that is hard to pigeon hole into one specific genre, but that is what sets this series apart from any other that I have read. “Hutchins Creek Cache” has elements that remind me of an old Western, but there is also the cozy mystery feel and the slow burn romance between the main characters that leaves a hint of intrigue. At the close of the book, Paige has a choice to make – does she stay in New York or move to Jackson Hole to be with Jake. I, for one am definitely interested in seeing how the future shakes out for these two not to mention how many more mysteries await.
I enjoy Deborah writing because I've come to know her characters through previous books. I hope Paige and Jake continue to be involved in solving mysteries whether they marry or not. I like the way the author takes real life history and incorporates it into the mysteries. Deborah Garner's books are just fun to read. They are light hearted, funny and sometimes keep you wanting to read and not put the book down.
