Oh my my! Captain Blood was my favorite honorable swashbuckler. I wanted to be him. As a kid, though, I don't think I knew there was a book too. Finding it as a free Kindle book was a real treat. The story stays more or less true from book to movie (I'm talking about the REAL movie - 1935) with a few exceptions to accommodate the shorter time available in film. But the book goes deeper into Peter Blood's thinking and feelings, explaining more of how he wrestles with the extraordinary events of his life. In the book, Arabella is not the simpering flirt that she is in the movie - she's a straightforward young woman with attitude and brains. Her uncle is even more evil in the book than in the movie. We also get a closer look at Blood's friends and foes and back-stabbers, and a good description of his actions as captain. OK, enough. I loved it. Warning, though: I am comfortable with old-fashioned language and writing styles. If you're not, you'd better stick with the movie, although I thought the book moved along just fine.

Captain Blood Rafael Sabatini 9781466257184 Books Reviews

I got this download because my hubby the Errol Flynn fan has made me watch the movie for years. I don't remember how closely the movie follows the book (I might not have been paying perfect attention to the movie!), but the book is absolutely delightful. Lovers of old-fashioned adventure stories (think Treasure Island and Ben Hur) will enjoy this one as well. Captain Blood-the book- clearly inspired every heroic pirate movie ever since- such a dashing super-hero type character! If you're looking for strict realism, go get a non-fiction book on pirates. This one is just a fun read... probably better for summer vacation, as I stayed up too late several nights to read on, and had trouble getting up in the morning!
"Captain Blood" is an old-fashioned tale of adventure, where mayhem, misfortune and misguided romance ebbs and flows like the roiling sea. Set mainly in the Caribbean, the story tells of a 17th century physician. Wrongly sentenced to the gallows in England, he escapes to rise through the ranks of both naval officers and the Brethren of Pirates to one of the highest in the West Indies. Peter Blood is a man of considerable intelligence and ingenuity whose changing moods and decisions are evinced in a most eloquent manner. Rafael Sabotini's oftimes florid prose is something worth savouring. Before I reached the last page I had ordered two more of this author's works.
What a beautiful story - despite certain credibility 'challenges', there is so much truth about the human condition in this tale that Sabatini must have clearly been a truly good person.
This is a must read for anyone with a soul.
BTW the errol flynn - basil rathbone movie has NOTHING to do with the book ;-)
This book was recommended to me in an article I read, (which I can't remember.) It said everyone should read this swashbuckler so I did! It didn't disappoint and is free. It is full of nonstop action and danger. It's also misogynist and stereotypical, but probably accurately reflects it's time. Read about it here http//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_Blood_(novel) You can also find this at Project Gutenberg along with many, many other free books that are out of copyright limitations. I highly recommend checking the site out. I generally find a title there and then purchase it for free from as I'm computer un-savvy in, oh, so many ways.
Story is set in the days of the Monmouth rebellion up until the beginning of the reign of Prince William.
We follow the adventures and misfortunes of Peter Blood, soldier, doctor, sailor, and more.
Enjoyable read in general.
Dated references to negroes and blacks as property/objects.
I greatly enjoyed this book. I had seen the old film-Captain Blood- starring Errol Flynn, but never read the book. I enjoyed the book greatly, finding the adventure and story much deeper than the movie ever went.

My favorite aspect of this book was the moments of pure humor or irony. Simply because a book is almost 100 years old does not mean it is dry. Peter Blood was incredibly an amusing character.

Some language, but light language. Any time worse language would have been used it was implied rather than written.

I greatly enjoyed this book.
I knew of Captain Blood from the classic Errol Flynn swashbuckler, as good as that flick is, Mr. Sabatini's book is much better. The story revolves around Dr. Peter Blood. Blood spent many years as an adventurer/soldier of fortune before he settles down to what he was trained to be years before, a physician. He gets swept up in the Monmouth rebellion (1685) and wrongly accused of being a rebel when caught providing medical aid to one. Blood like many others avoid a noose but is exiled to Barbados, an English colony as a slave. With his skills he is treated better than many slaves but manages to annoy a high up plantation owner (who's daughter he has a crush on) and is looking at some severe punishment when a Spanish privateer attacks and seizes Barbados. Blood leads several other slaves in an escape on the Spanish ship and the adventure is on. I really enjoyed it, of course you know Dr. Blood will win out in the end but the twists and turns are simply great, enjoyable fun. This was my first Sabatini novel and now I've read several, one of the most impressive things, to me is his historical research, he really puts a lot of history in all his books and Captain Blood is no different. I am sometimes hesitant to read a novel written over a hundred years ago. Yes I've read many of the classics and always enjoy Mark Twain, but many old novels can have difficult dialogue and an odd pace. This is not true of any Sabatini novel I've read so far. They move like a modern novel, only the authentic 17th centaury dialogue might me a little confusing to some, it didn't bother me. Overall I found Captain Blood to be an exciting, fast paced page turner, the fact that his books are available very cheap on is a great bonus.
